Matrimonty!

How cute is this? Monty's marrying a woman who's a virgin when it comes to golf. From handles to grips and sticks to shafts, she's come a long way, he says, but still doesn't really know or care about the sport.

Given Colin's obsession with golf (which killed his first marriage), it's kind of strange he'd pick a bride who isn't all that keen about his obsession. One of the things Charles and I enjoy is a joint addiction to golf and I think that makes us more compatible.

Hmmm...as much as I am happy about this for Monty and hope it really does motivate him to win a major, I am of the opinion that "opposites attract, but they often don't sustain". Oh well...let's just wish them well, shall we?

But what makes me really happy is finding Renton back on the golf channel with Warren. it's so good to see him healthy again. What a great pair they are commentating on the European Tour. I can't wait to hear what Renton says about Monty's news - he always likes to dig him just a little.

Congrats Monty...and welcome back Renton!

When golfers ruin golf

I should have blogged this 2 weeks ago when I probably played with the most annoying golfer ever. I kid you not when I say that a very very nice man, who really could hit a ball, thought he was playing the PGA on every shot. I have never seen a pre-shot routine that took so long - on every shot. We're not talking a minute - we're talking mintues - many long, frustrating and "holding up those behind us" minutes.

He was completely oblivious to it even though his partner tried to joke with him and said more than once..."just hit the ball, Bud". What really teed me off was that I let it affect my game. I rushed shots becuase I was trying to make up the time he wasted because I felt so bad for those lining up behind us. Charles and I ended up walking off the course at the 12th hole because we just couldn't stand it any longer. As we walked back down the course, those behind us said, with a knowing grin..."A little slow up there????" We just rolled our eyes and said..."too slow for us" and kept moving. I think they knew it wasn't our fault, but I felt so embarrassed anyway.

Pace of play is THE most important "rule" in the game of golf in my opinion. Women (at least the ones I play with) are extremely diligent about keeping pace because we are criticized (unfairly I may add) about our slow play. I have never seen a man pick up a ball after 8 shots or even 10. Women will do it all the time to keep the pace moving.

All chix all the time!

Mandated golf carts - A good walk spoiled

Sounds like a step backwards in the "sport" of golf to me! How ridiculous to mandate carts just to get more people on the course. And they try to say that it's "not for the money - it's so more people can golf". Sure...more people...more revenue for the golf course...more people with mandated carts which aren't free...more revenue. Do they think we are that stupid?

We have a hard enough time justifying golf as a sport rather than just a game, but if this is allowed to continue, we not only disgrace the sport, the "anti-golfers" of the world can no longer say in the words of Mark Twain, “Golf is a good walk spoiled." And it would be very unfair to take that pleasure way from those sad cases who have not experienced the joy of walking from a well hit 5 wood up to the green looking at a birdie putt!

Tiger-less playoffs are NOT toothless

Hi

Hope you all had a great weekend. Mine was on the golf course, as usual, playing okay in the rain and terribly in the sunshine - go figure! I seem to be a foul-weather golfer - which is good since I live in an area where rain is "the new sunshine".

I am sharing this article because it made me laugh. I guess the author isn't much of a golfer. I can't imagine the mental and physical strength one has to have to play in the PGA. I have a tough time playing 2 or 3 days in a row and I can push my cart AND it's cool here. And to say that Tiger only works 5 hours is ridiculous. HA! That's not even worth a comment.

I guess he just likes to get attention (which unfortunately I'm giving him, right?) Oh well...I find a lot of jounalists are like that. Not us bloggers, however, right? wink wink nudge nudge

Anyway...I enjoyed the golf this weekend - there were a ton of great players out there and it was really nice to see Stricker win again. He seems so nice (nicer than Mr. Chad, that's for sure). And my fave Ernie didn't do too badly either, so I was happy.

Anyway...we'll all see Tiger this weekend and get our fill of the media fawning all over him. All the non-golfers will be tuned in and, of course, we'll watch more Cialas commercials than we ever thought possible.

How great is that!

Fedex Cup - a joke or just sad tale?

Well, I listened to it last night on the 19th hole on the Golf Channel and it's all over the news this week. The Fedex Cup isn't all it was cracked up to be - in fact, the cup is more than a little chipped.

I did really like the advertisements on TV - Fedex put a lot of work into those, but the actual event is a sad disappointment by many. I will watch the Barclay's but not because it is a Fedex Cup tournament, but because I love golf and watch it every week. BTW...did you see the Vijay was 5 over after only 7 holes? What happened? I'll have to wait and see tonight, but that was a surprise to wake up to this AM.

Anyway...I'll watch it all and I'll enjoy the golf. But the fact that KJ couldn't donate the money to charity until he is 45 is just plain wrong. Fedex has the money now...they certainly spent millions on advertising. I don't think KJ is the only one who would donate the money. So now there are losers in this game - sad really...

Caddyshack Bill arrested over ‘drunken’ golf cart spin

Oh Billy...looks like you were driving "over par" in Sweden. Hmmm...I guess we'll have to check back in 2 weeks when the blood tests come back.

I'm trying to figure out why you were out in regular traffic in a golf cart anyway? No taxis available at the hotel? That behavior in itself is a bit disconcerting for us fans, but we'll assume innocent until proven guilty.

I don't drink when I golf because it really does a number to my already pathetic game, but I do enjoy the 19th hole and a glass of wine aftewards - either drown my sorrows or to life my spirits - not sure which it is...but I start thinking about it around the 16th hole. I expect my breath too smells of alcohol when I leave, but I know I am under the limit with just 1 glass. I sure hope the same is true for you Bill.

I'll be back with a follow up to this in about 14 days.

Wanted: Arrogant upstart to catch the Tiger by the tail

Although I don't consider Tiger's dominance of golf "boring", I do appreciate the sentiment in this article.

I would love to see Tiger face stiffer competition, especially from my faves like Ernie.   But he certainly can't be called an "upstart", whereas Sergio can.  Yes, besides Monty (who I love to watch too - and hope will win a major someday (with Renton commentating - what could be better than that!)), I would love to see Sergio win more and win a major or two or three even.

I don't have any problems with his passion and "foot in the mouth" blusters.  He brings a raw energy and passion that is a 2-edged sword he hasn't mastered yet, but I still like him.  Sometimes he makes me mad (still can't get over that spitting in the cup thing - yuck!), but he gives the media something to talk about besides Tiger.  As they say..."better to be remembered for something bad, than not to be remembered at all!"

ADVICE FROM A RETIRED HUSBAND:

It is important for men to remember that, as women grow older, it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. When you notice this, try not to yell at them. Some are oversensitive, and there's nothing worse than an oversensitive woman.

My name is Jim. Let me relate how I handled the situation with my wife, Terri. When I retired a few years ago, it became necessary for Terri to get a full-time job along with her part-time job, both for extra income and for the health benefits that we needed. Shortly after she started working, I noticed she was beginning to show her age.

I usually get home from the golf club about the same time she gets home from work. Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner. I don't yell at her.

Instead, I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table. I generally have lunch in the Men's Grill at the club so eating out is not reasonable. I'm ready for some home-cooked grub when I hit that door.

She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating. But now it's not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after dinner. I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won't clean themselves. I know she really appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done before she goes to bed.

Another symptom of aging is complaining, I think. For example she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour. But, boys, we take 'em for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two or even three days. That way she won't have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn't hurt her any (if you know what I mean). I like to think tact is one of my strong points.

When doing simple jobs, she seems to think she needs more rest periods. She had to take a break when she was only half-finished mowing the yard. I try not to make a scene. I'm a fair man. I tell her to fix herself a nice, big, cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. And, as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me too.

I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support Terri. I'm not saying that showing this much consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will find it impossible! Nobody knows better than I do how frustrating women get as they get older. However, guys, even if you just use a little more tact and less criticism of your aging wife because of this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other.

Signed,
Jim

EDITOR'S NOTE:

Jim died suddenly on February 7 of a perforated rectum. The police report says he was found with a Calloway extra-long 50-inch Big Bertha Driver II golf club jammed up his rear end, with barely 5 inches of grip showing, and a sledge hammer laying nearby.

His wife Terri was arrested and charged with murder. The all-woman jury took only 10 minutes to find her Not Guilty, accepting her defense that Jim, somehow, without looking, accidentally sat down on his golf club.

Even Ernie can't hold back the superlatives when it comes to Tiger

Ha ha...even the mild mannered Ernie couldn't hold back at the PGA. "__ck me!" from the Big Easy seemed so out of character - especially on the air!

I didn't realize this happened until I read this story in the Emirates Today. And I just loved Feherty's comment...

To quote Feherty, when Tiger hit an impossible shot out of the rough with a wedge and took a divot the size of an aircraft carrier...: "He [Tiger] swung the club so hard, I thought he would need corrective surgery on the tenderest parts of his anatomy."

Ha ha...gotta love Mr. Feherty - such great lines and sense of humor.

Well...Ernie, I guess you're human too. No worries...we all "__ck up" from time to time, especially on the golf course :)

The Game of Golf - links poetry at its best

Time for more levity...came across the poem on the Fred and Cathy radio blog on Clear FM. Not sure if I have the author right, but I think it is from Tom Galloway. Anyway...it's so perfect for those who love golf!

THE GAME OF GOLF

In my hand I hold a ball….white and dimpled, rather small….
Oh , how bland it does appear….this harmless looking little sphere….

By its size I could not guess….the awesome strength it does possess….
But since I fell beneath its spell….I’ve wandered through the fires of hell. .. .

My life has not been quite the same….Since I chose to play this stupid game….
It rules my mind for hours on end…A fortune it has made me spend….

It has made me swear and yell and cry… .I hate myself and want to die….
It promises a thing called par….If I can hit it straight and far.. .

To master such a tiny ball ….should not be very hard at all .
But my desires the ball refuses….and does exactly like it chooses… .

It hooks and slices, dribbles and dies….and disappears before my eyes….
Often it will take a whim….to hit a tree or take a swim. ..

With miles of grass on which to land….it finds a tiny patch of sand….
Then has me offering up my soul….if only it would find the hole.. ..

It’s made me whimper like a pup. ..and swear that I will give it up….
And take a drink to ease my sorrow….but the ball knows I’ll be back tomorrow!!!!

Hitting the Grass Ceiling

For all women who still feel naked on the first tee...this article is for you.

Remember the first time you had to get up in front of an audience and make a presentation or a speech? I do....my knees were shaking and there was a huge frog in my throat. That was many years ago and I still see the same reaction in young people (men and women) entering business. Some things never change.

Sure...they tell you to imagine the audience naked...HA! That's just silly. What you need to do is "embrace the moment" and know that you've been given a great opportunity to shine. Being prepared is absolutely necessary - never assume you'll just "wing it" or you will fly flat on your face.

You need to practice in front of a mirror, in the car as you drive to work and don't be afraid to ask your buddy to help you with a dry run. And then...go knock their socks off! I've been in business for over 25 years and have made more presentations than I can count - from small meetings of peers, to board meeting, to investor meetings and to large conferences with thousands of people in the audience. I even dressed up a Marilyn Monroe to do a training session for hundreds of channel partners (but that's another story :)).

So why am I telling you all this? Because in my world of high tech, it is still a "man's world" just like in golf. And when you stand up on that first tee with men, just like you step up to the mike at a conference.... you better come prepared.

First...take lessons (NOT from your boyfriend or spouse). Next...learn the rules of golf - ask your pro to teach them to you, including the etiquette. Then...practice, practice, practice.

Play with other women, either formally through a networking group (like Chix with Stix) or with friends. I recommend 9 and dine...18 holes can be long when you are learning. Evenings after work with the girls is fun and you learn a lot from each other.

Be very very aware of your pace of play - no one likes to play with a slow poke and unfortunately, women get a reputation (wrongly I might add) for being slow. If you lose a ball....look for a minute or two, but it's better to abandon it to keep the pace going. Don't be afraid to pick up your ball either if you are fallling behind. Remember, you are learning and practicing and the score doesn't matter. What I liked to do when I was learning was to count my good balls - I never kept real score until after my 2nd year.

When you golf at a business tournament, don't keep apologizing. And when a man makes a shot he's not happy with, never say..."Well at least it was straight (or long or whatever)". Just be quiet. Never give another player advice unless they ask for it (Men....you could learn this lesson!!!).

Oh...there are so many things that are the same in business and in golf. Scot Duke has some good pragmatic advice on the subject in his book How to Play Business Golf.

For women, the thing you must always remember is that "you belong" - on the golf course and in business. Skill and talent should dictate your acceptance into both worlds. I know it's not easy and we all feel the Glass and Grass Ceiling at some point in both worlds, but don't give up. And remember...All chix all the time!

How badly do you want to win, Gary? Not badly enough it would seem...

Dear fellow Canadians and golf fans everywhere...

I have to say I have some serious mixed emotions about Player picking Weir for the President's Cup, given his performance (or lack thereof) over the last 2 years. Yes, it is in Montreal and it would be very nice to see a Canadian in the field, but do we really believe that Mike is the only real draw for this event, when Tiger and Ernie and so many other great golfers will be there?

I am sorry...but having Gary say the tournament would be "flat" without a Canadian in the field insults me as a Canadian. I really believe Canadians who love golf and who could afford to make the trip to Montreal do not require a Canadian in the field to make the event a resounding success. In fact, I think this move by Player tells us and the other team members that it's not about creating a winning team - it's about media and peer pressure and politics and favoritism. If I were the other team members, I'd be peeved that Gary let pressure influence his decision. I'd want to be on a winning team with the best international players in the field. Sentiment has no place when it comes to winning and losing.

Sorry Mike...you're a good guy...but you didn't make the grade this year or last and so you shouldn't be on the International Team. Unless of course, this event is just a media event and not a real competition. Starting to look that way, unfortunately.

Sergio had a Big Boo Hoo after a big Boo Boo

Well, this shocked me when I heard about it, but not so much that Sergio signed an incorrect score card, but that they still score golf championships like this. Trusting your opponent to keep your score seems ludicrous to me. Where did that brain dead idea come from? Sergio is having the best and worst years of his career possibly - so close and yet so far. Having this happen to him was just "icing on the cake" as they say...

But really, in every other sport, the score is kept by officials and technology, not by the players themselves. Athletes should be focusing on their game, not on their partner's score. I think it's time for a change to the rules in championship play. Sure it's nice that in golf, a player has to be honest, etc etc...but no one was dishonest in this case - it was just an oversight and I don't think a player should be DQ'd for a mistake like that. A penalty yes...DQ, no...

Boo (named after Yogi Bear's sidekick Boo Boo - please tell me that's not his real name) made a big boo boo too - and if Sergio is penalized so should Boo. A shared mistake should share the consequences IMHO.

I'm no Beckham, says Tiger

Maybe not, but Tiger certainly should have been the "poster child" for this year's PGA in the Tulsa airport. What's Phil doing plastered on the walls?

Interesting that the non-controversial comment to that fiasco was “Somebody didn’t think. They just plastered Phil’s face on the wall.” No...someone thought long and hard about that - and that someone was Callaway Golf. They are a big sponsor of this year's PGA and Phil is still their "main man". In fact, it didn't stop there. Phil was all over the golf channel last night - giving tips and doing analysis with the golf channel gang. Callaway is certainly getting their money's worth from Phil. I hope he at least makes the cut.

BTW...what's the most overused golf phrase in the world? It's not..."In the hole!"...Nope...it's "yet to win a major". I am so sick of that phrase. Last night I finally changed channels to Iron Chef because I was sick of listening to the analysts go on and on and on about it. Alright, already! We get it!

Thanks goodness Lorena broke out of that...and Padraig too...the problem is that the media just replaces them with someone else. Sigh....somethings never change...

No Dogs. No Women

As a woman who has "grown up in a man's world" in the business of high technology, I am pretty used to getting treated with respect and equally among my peers (with a few exceptions that don't deserve to be mentioned). So, I was quite amazed by all the excitement of the LPGA playing at St Andrews. One...I didn't know this was a first (shame on me) and two...I couldn't believe that it's take this long to let the LPGA grace the fairways of the home of golf (shame on them - whoever "them" are).

This is going to be a wonderful tournament to watch and I am hopeful that the viewing audience on TV is beyond anything we've seen before. The quality of golf on the LPGA is better than it has ever been (IMHO) and perhaps this championship will open the eyes of golfers who have been slow to acknowledge (or ever watch) the women show off their amazing skills.

I would love Annika to win this one - she is still the queen of golf in my book.
