Watching Weir beat Tiger at the Presidents Cup - I now believe in Miracles

It was like watching Darren Clarke at the Ryder Cup today. I didn't expect much from him last year and he surprised me (pleasantly) and I didn't expect much from Mike Weir today. And was I surprised? I was shocked, but I was thrilled!!! It's good to be wrong -really good!

The match between Tiger and Weir today was like watching a David and Goliath movie. And like most biblical stories, where usually a miracle is involved, there is certainly was today.

Wow! Even though I didn't think Mike was a good captain's pick, he proved Gary Player right and played like a champion this week.

It's funny too...it's like there were no losers today. Even though the International Team has already lost the Cup (it's 2:06 PM PST and Goosen is 2 up so I'm still watching), Mike's win over "class act" Tiger seems to take the sting out of the overall loss. (Or maybe it's just the Canadian in me :)).

I loved the roller coaster ride this week and the matches were so exciting. Watching the Mickelson and Singh match was pretty cool. I am not big fans with either of them (although I respect their games), so it was fun watching them play as true antagonists. I wish they'd halved their match. No winners...no losers.

Okay, so all you Phil and Vijay fans can send me hate mail :) - but there was little doubt that Mike was the big winner this week, even though the US team won the Cup. Mike Weir won our hearts.

And did you know, that on a per capita basis, Canadians play more golf than Americans? Sounds like another miracle, given how much snow we get from Nov - April every year.

More tomorrow...

Faldo proves he's a good captain while McGinley proves he's a poor sport

Well, I thought you've probably heard enough about the "less than gimme" putt being awarded to the Weir/Singh team at the Presidents Cup (more sentiment would you say???), so...I decided to talk about the recent Ryder Cup news that Paul McGinley has resigned as Faldo's Vice Captain after Nicky didn't pick him for the Seve Tournament.

Bravo Nick and buck up McGinley. What's with this giving struggling players a spot in an important tournament just because it's in their country". Sorry...but I'm glad to see Nick Faldo make the tough decision and pick the best, not the local favorite for his team. It makes me even happier that he's the captain for next year's Ryder Cup.

I think McGinley is acting childish and should grow up and realize this isn't the local school ground. You haven't played well so why should you be awarded? Sentimental favorites are getting out of hand in golf.

Now...who would I pick as Vice Captain for next year's Ryder Cup??? I'd pick Thomas Bjorn. Who would you pick?

The Presidents Cup as seen from Canada and the US

Hi
I've been browsing through the news on both sides of the border and find it interesting the different perspectives the two countries' journalists put on this tourney...

I enjoyed the trash talking in the Washington Times Daily today. It is fun to see the "gentlemen of golf" let down their guard and show their human (and not so gentlemany) side. Phil who??? Ha ha...Vijay does it again.

And then there's one of our Canadian reporters who loves to preach gloom and doom for Mike Weir. Funny, but I don't think a US reporter would ever do that. Too much loyalty down there, but up here in Canada, we tend to be quite self-critical and we beat up on each other more. I wonder why that is...

Anyway, I think a Weir/Tiger match would be very very scary for Mike. I expect he's feeling enormous pressure right now (kind of how Darren Clarke probably felt at the Ryder Cup). I hope Mike proves to all of us that he was a good captain's choice like Darren did (I didn't think either of them should have been picked, but I'm happy I was wrong about Darren and I hope I am wrong about Mike). But if the Presidents Cup was part of the Fantasy Four game on the Golf Channel, Mike would not be one of my picks -hey...$25K is a lot of money to put on a sentimental favorite.

Which is better - the Presidents Cup or the Ryder Cup?

I'd be curious as to your opinion on this question...which is better: The Presidents Cup or The Ryder Cup?

This article does present a compelling argument for the Presidents Cup. On paper, it looks better, but there is something to be said for the long standing history of the Ryder Cup, the passion of the European players and their ability to shine when brought together as a team.
The media and fans seem to be more excited about the Ryder Cup as well. So my vote is for the Ryder Cup.

Perhaps this journalist isn't as keen on the Ryder Cup because the US hasn't done too well in the past decade and even Tiger seems to struggle there. wink...

Oh well...no matter...they are both great events and I look forward to each of them every year. I just wish the LPGA would introduce a "Queens Cup" someday.

An overview of Presidents Cup in Gazette

Hi everyone

In follow up to my last rant about a lack of press about the Presidents Cup, I found that the Montral Gazette did put together a nice package of information on the tournament (history, line ups, etc) - they dedicated quite a few pages. (Too bad this didn't come out a bit earlier so people could get excited and plan a trip north).

Anyway...the front page of this section is shown below. But if you want to read the whole section you need access to PressDisplay.com. But that's easy to do.... All you need to do is register at www.pressdisplay.com with the offer code: golfgal. Registering is easy and it doesn't ask much beyond your name, email address and a password.

If you do register with the offer code, you will be able to read the entire paper (and hundreds of others if you wish) for an entire month for free (it's a $99 value). Then you can compare the different coverage of the Cup across all the International papers, which can be entertaining.
Enjoy

Presidents Cup finally makes Canadian News

Hi y'all

I don't know about you, but as a Canadian, "eh", I am pretty disappointed in the lack of attention paid by Canadian newspapers on the Presidents Cup. Sure, they're talking about it now, but frankly, the past month or two should have been full of stories and articles and interviews about it. But I have online access to almost every paper in Canada through PressDisplay.com and there has hardly been a peep about it.

Canada is a wonderful country, but we do have some issues with promoting ourselves. Where is all the hooplaa about Mike Weir in Canadian news? Are we so afraid he'll fail that we're afraid to over-promote him? I personally didn't think he should have made the team as he didn't earn it this year (sorry Mike), but now that he is part of the team, why not exploit the heck out of it and get more attention on Montreal this week?

Oh well...I guess the US team has Mike Weir's back, but Canadian Press doesn't.

I'm proud to be Canadian, but sometimes I wish we made a little bit more noise about ourselves.

I did a bit of an Internet search and saw that there are quite a few tickets still available. I wish I could go, but I wish even more that they were sold out.

Come on Canada - it's the best of the best. Go out and show them a gallery like they've never seen before!

Obese birdies don't fly south and a disappointing fantasy four

Although most of today's news is about Drug testing in golf (yawn), I came across this story about Canada Geese in California not flying south because they are just too fat from all the junk food bird lovers are feeding them.

At first I thought it was funny, but I'm the first one to tip toe through th e disgusting bird droppings at the water laden courses I play in Vancouver. The geese are beautiful, but the "presents" they leave on the course are becoming a serious problem.

I saw on TV at one of the championships (might have been on the European Tour) the superintendent bring his dog around the course in his cart throughout the day and send him out to chase the geese and ducks away. Not a bad idea...

How about we let our marshalls bring their dogs to the course and drive them around to scare away the birdies. I think that would be pretty cool. Dogs get exercise, course stays much cleaner and far less dead birdies from errant tee shots (yes, I've seen a few get knocked out)

BTW...nice to see Flesch win on the weekend. But did you try and sign up for Fantasy Four at the Golf Channel? What a mess! That program was not ready for prime time. The system was full of bugs. I have 4 support requests in so far. They have come back and said they will correct the mistakes they made with my roster, but so far, nothing's happened. I think they must be overwhelmed by support requests. Oh well..I was a programmer in an earlier life, so I can appreciate the fact that they may have rushed to release the program too early. Let's hope it's all cleaned up by the Viking tournament this weekend.

So far...my four haven't done too badly and I got all the passwords too (yes, I am addicted) :)

Golf ALMOST taken seriously as a sport by introducing drug testing

Step 1: Recognize golf as a sport and include it in the Olympics

Step 2: Introduce drug testing into golf

Oh...I think they got it backwards? Am I against drug testing? Absolutely not...I think it is a valid part of competitive sport and so it should be part of golf (which IS a sport). My big problem with this debate isn't about the drugs - it's about golf being considered just a game. For crying out loud...curling is in the Olympics, and how can you call that a sport and not call golf a sport?

Oh well...I'm always bitching about this, so don't mind me...

And of course, there are those who say drugs won't help you putt better or improve your short game (unless you consider drugs that help you focus and calm you down). But drugs can help your long game and so they should be banned (and those other "soft" drugs should be banned as well).

If you missed it...here's the list of prohibited substances (just in case you are planning on playing next year in the PGA):

1 Anabolic Agents

2 Hormones and Related Substances

3 Agents with Anti-Estrogenic Activity

4 Diuretics and Other Masking Agents

5 Stimulants

6 Narcotics

7 Cannabinoids

8 Beta Blockers

9 Enhancement of Oxygen Transfer

10 Chemical and Physical Manipulation

The following additional substances may be prohibited at the option of individual Golf Organizations:

A Glucocorticosteroids and

B Beta-2-Antagonists

Looks like Dick Pound (head of World AntiDoping) isn't all that impressed with this list, but hey...it's a start. I guess the PGA is trying to help those oldy but goody guys with a touch of arthritis.

And let's not forget those folks with medical conditions like Shawn McKeel who needs special exemptions (Shawn has a testosterone deficiency and needs to take the hormone for his health).

So drug testing is in....but golf is still out of the Olympics.

Back to step 1!

He IS good enough to get angry!

No one loves a passionate golfer more than I do. But sometimes that passion has negative consequences and well...you pay the price for that. And so Ian Poulter is facing another fine.

When my partner or I get angry and swear or bang our club on the ground, we remind each other that "You're not good enough to get angry". Then we almost laugh - almost. It's so hard sometimes to keep tempers in check for us hackers and it costs us nothing. I can't imagine how I would hold my temper if I was a professional. So I feel for the guys and am surprised there aren't more incidents like this on the course.

Anway...I really like Ian Poulter and his outrageous fashion style. I can't wait to see his outfit at his wedding next Saturday. I'll make sure I post as many pics of him as I can from all the UK papers and tabloids.

And I love the line he used when asked why he is not playing on Nick Faldo's Britain and Ireland team at the Seve Trophy in Ireland next September because of the wedding.

Poulter said: "I've kept Katie waiting for 10 years, so I had better not say I can't make it on the day we've agreed because a golf tournament has come up."

Good answer Ian! Best wishes to you and Katie.

Pathetic tabloid antics don't win any awards

Divorce...it's ugly for everyone. So if something is ugly, why would you want to hang it out like your dirty laundry out for everyone to see/read?

From this story, it looks like Andy Mill is trying very hard to either gain sympathy or pity - hard to tell. But his comments below were not spoken in haste. He had to spend some time thinking about those little witty phrases and that makes him pathetic in my mind.

“Greg Norman at one time was my best friend and a year and a half ago I would have taken a bullet for this guy,” Mill said. “I didn’t realize he was the one that was going to pull the trigger.”

I guess I think this is just ridiculous. I feel bad for those going through a break up, but sharing his pain in this way is just too tabloid for me. Sorry Andy...if you'd kept quiet and dealt with your personal issues in private, you would be better off. This little tantrum in the media did nothing for your reputation as far as I am concerned.

Dottie choking on her "chokin' freakin' dogs." comment? Appears not...

How embarrassing to be caught "on camera" without knowing it, eh? Now all of us have said things in private that were not kind. Let's face it - we're human. Is it right? No...but it's normal. And before we start throwing stones at Dottie for her slip of the tongue, let's remember the last time we said something we hoped no one would ever hear.

I was surprised she didn't apologize for her "chokin' freakin' dogs." statement, but at the same time, she said it and she meant it when she said it. So do we want her to lie and say she didn't mean it?

I guess this one goes down in the "memorial statements" along with Johnny Miller's when he said that, "Craig Perry's swing would make Ben Hogan puke."

Anyway...it was a great tournament and I was very happy to see the US win. I guess it's because I know the players much better and like so many of them. OR maybe it was because the European outfits were butt-ugly! Man, could they have designed anything less flattering? I don't think so.

Anyway...I loved the whole event and hope the LPGA will introduce a "rest of world" against the US tournament on the off years. We could play it in Canada and freeze our touchies off here too :)

I'm still trying to figure out who Laura Davies doesn't consider a "friend" on the US team.

Solheim Cup brings out the best and worst in people

Well, the Internet seems to live forever, doesn't it? Things that happened years ago are "news" to those who never saw them before. So was the case with the Irish Independent's story about Catrin Nilsmark's remarks about Cristie Kerr being a "brat" and Michelle Redman "having no talent". I posted it yesterday because it was published in yesterday's paper like it was current news. I guess the translation from Swedish to English they had was a little "outdated".

I was browsing around and came across this posting from Waggle Room:

How the Solheim Cup Became Very Serious, Very Fast (Hint: Dottie Pepper)

First, let me say that I really enjoyed the post. I wasn't a golf addict until a few years ago, so a lot of this was news to me. I really like Dottie Pepper on the air (I wish I had seen her play more), but had no idea that the other ladies didn't like her. Interesting. But it doesn't change my opinion of her. I think she's cool.

Anyway...back to my point. I found out from this post that Catrin said those catty things back in 2002 - not this year. Hmmm...I wonder if she feels the same today? Oh well...still nasty regardless of when it was said.

But a piece of news that is current is Laura Davies saying that all the gals on the US team were her friends, except one - but of course, she wouldn't say which one. I expect it is one of the older ladies - it takes time to "not" be someone's friend. Anyone know who it is????

Anyway...I really enjoyed the Solheim Cup coverage this AM. The weather was pretty brutal at times, but the players hit some amazing shots. The excitement came through the TV for me.

And although I said I wasn't going to do this...I am watching the Fedex Cup - and that 28 of Tiger's on the front nine today was amazing. birdie birdie birdie birdie birdie birdie...BORING! (NOT!!!!!) :)

Enjoy the weekend everyone. I'll be back on Monday.

Solheim Cup tarnished by bad sportswomanship

Well well well...isn't this story interesting - and sad! I guess I have take back what I said yesterday that there would be a lot less bitching at the Solheim Cup than the Tour Championship. I was wrong - but I wish I wasn't.

Can you imagine publicly saying these things about another golfer? I thought we were all gentlepeople in golf (at least on the outside). My goodness, I sure hope Catrin gets her clock cleaned during her rounds. With this kind of catty attitude, she should go into mud wrestling and get out of golf. There is no room for the likes of her if this is her style of play.

Solheim versus Fedex - Postive versus Negative - Not hard to choose what I'm watching this weekend!

I am subscribed to the golf channel and so I get an email everyday with today's latest news. Today I was delighted to see that Natalie Gulbis has a blog and is writing about her experiences at the Solheim Cup this year. Talk about upbeat! Wow...makes you want to be part of that team!

Then there was this article: Time for Players to Quit Whining. 63 million dollars for 4 weeks work. Hmmm....I'd say that's a lot to whine about, wouldn't you? Give me a break!

I don't know about you, but my parents worked very hard when I was growing up and they were never able to take time off work to be with me on my first days of school. They worked hard and raised me well and loved me. They didn't whine about only getting 2 weeks off a year for our summer vacation. It boggles my mind that these players whine about 4 weeks in a row. I think they are turning into Prima Donas. Guys...you are the luckiest people in the world. Instead of whining, start thanking God that you CAN golf 4 weeks in a row and that your vocation is what you love. You've been more than blessed.

Anyway...it will be over soon, but I have to say, I'm getting pretty down about the negativity from the "best", as you can tell. And I hate being down, so I'm going to focus on the positive. I'm going to play golf all weekend and watch the Solheim Cup when I'm not playing and enjoy every minute of it, no matter who wins.

Never mind Tiger v Phil, let’s send in the clowns and then go watch the Solheim Cup

I have to say I was pretty shocked myself when I heard how bad the greens were going to be this week at the last playoff game. I agree with this writer - you would think that with a year to plan this, they just might have foreseen a potential problem with the southern heat and mitigated some of the risks associated with this "above normal" summer wave (did someone mention global warming?). They had to see this coming.

Well, it will be an interesting week for sure. I think I'll watch the Solheim Cup instead. I saw the 1990 Cup on the golf channel this AM while getting ready for work. It was so great to see the big names from the past when they were in their prime like Nancy Lopez, Laura Davies, Beth Daniel, Pat Bradley, Rosie Jones and one of my favorite on-course commentators: Dottie (Pepper) Mochrie.

Yup...Solheim looks like a lot more fun and there will be a lot less "bitching" than at the PGA playoffs this week.

Mikelson opts out of 3rd Fedex Cup event....AND not feeling too bad about it

I find it interesting that there is a playoff where players don't have to play to stay in the running. I think that says something about the way points are calculated perhaps.

And Phil pulling out AFTER making those comments about his frustration with Finchem...hmmm....don't like the looks of that. Phil, did your mother not tell you, "If you have nothing good to say, say nothing"? Perhaps if you hadn't shared your frustration, some of us wouldn't think you were sulking.

I have to say that so far, I'm not impressed with the structure of the Fedex Cup. I like the way it is in baseball. When a team makes the playoffs, it plays until it wins or loses. There's no opting out of a playoff game. I know I know...there are lots of players to spread around, but still...I don't like it that the best in the world don't have to play to win.

Perhaps a break is needed after the last "point event" before the playoffs where players can rest. Then I'd like to see the points start at zero before the playoffs start. Make them play all 4 games and see who comes out on top. The chance of a cinderella story is better and we get to see the big guns 4 weeks in a row!

Mickelson Tames Tiger

Did anyone watch the press conference after the first or second round where Phil said he was chuckling throughout the round watching Tiger? It was because Butch had shared with Phil some "inside information" on Tiger's game - mannerisms...behavior...we don't really know (Phil kept that to himself), but he did indicate then that it helped him understand Tiger and that it helped him to play against him.

Hmmm....I don't know about you, but I find Butch's behavior a little bit "off" - not entirely unethical, but I'm not impressed with it.

I realize he wants to give Phil every advantage, but golf is a business and in business, consultants and personal coaches sign non-disclosure agreements to keep inside information safe and secure for their clients. I think the same should happen in golf. Golfers and their coaches share intimate strategic information that should be kept confidential. If Hank hasn't signed an NDA with Tiger yet, I bet he will before this week is over.

I guess it was too enticing for Butch not to stick it to Tiger. Oh well...you can bet that Tiger will stick it to Butch and Phil again and again and again...that man has a looooong memory :)

Well done Phil...but don't get too cocky...one win does not a Fedex champion make!
