Highway 18 - The Campbells scramble Canadian bacon and eggs

Well, from the first episode to the last, there was never a dull moment on Golf Channel's Highway 18 (okay, maybe the Trump croquet challenge was a bit lame, but overall, this series was a rollercoaster physically and emotionally).

I watched every episode at least twice because I found myself missing so much. It was a fun and exhilerating ride, not only for the contestants, but us die-hard fans too.

So many times I wondered how the players managed to escape injury and disaster as they played chicken on the highways and drove themselves to the brink of exhaustion day after day.

It was inevitable that this competion would eventually take its toll on the contestants. After watching arguably the best player in the bunch put his arm out of commission last week, I thought maybe things might tone down, just a bit, on the last day. WRONG! That final challenge tonight was brutal to watch and obvious "torture" for both teams.

But Rob and Charlotte proved tonight that nice guys (and gals) can finish first and crossed the finish line with flag in tow (nice touch) to win the $100K in prizes. Congratulations Rob and Charlotte!!!!

Rob and Charlotte were out celebrating with friends tonight, but Charlotte took a few moments to share their victory with all of us who lived vicariously through them on this show...

video

The Ash's were together tonight as well to celebrate their amazing journey and I was happy to be able to connect with them and talk about what that last day was like for them both. It was worse than we saw...way worse. But you just can't keep a good Canuck down!

video

Now for the 2nd half of the winning team...Rob Campbell...

video

Jay and I connected Wed AM to chat about last night and as always, he shared some information I didn't know by watching the show. That's why I love these interviews!

video

And of course, a week without Parker is a week without sunshine :)

video

Finally I got to chat with Peach and get his recommendations on what the GC might like to do for the next Highway 18 to make the show even better.

video

It was a bittersweet week for me. This is the last time I'll get to interview all of these great people. I feel like I made a bunch of new friends and I'm going to miss them.

But life has to go on for everyone. Did you know that Rob has a band that recently released a CD? Check it out on http://www.robcampbell.tv/. And Charlotte will continue to pursue her golf career - check out her site and Blingo Ballmarks business which helps pay her way to her Futures Tour events (although with the cash and travel $ she'll now be able to travel in style on her way to the LPGA.)

Jay will continue to pursue his golfing career and I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of him in the future - he has game and he has determination. Good luck Jay!

The Ash'es will be partying in Vegas soon (I'm not sure that town is ready for them ;)). I know the forums certainly aren't! LOL!!!

Parker and Andy will continue to make people's lives just a little more fun by making them laugh. I hope we get to see them again. As they say... laughter is the best medicine for anything that ails ya.

I started this whole series with my first interview with Keri and it grew from there. I wanted to end this ride with some closing words from her.

video

Gotta get me one of those "Sweet Spot" pink clubs. I look good in pink :) Sounds like Keri has some interesting opportunities ahead and that GC 'may' be scouting for a HW 18 -2. I sure hope so.

As for me, there's no rest for the wicked...next week, I've got 4 interviews lined up after Big Break Michigan - the fun never stops on Golfgal's blog!

Highway 18 - Episode 9: Jay Mangled by Blue Monster

It was a bitter sweet semi-final tonight. The team most fans thought were a shoe-in for the finale were tripped up, giving serious advantage to the other 2 teams. Tonight Jay and Peach not only reached the end of the road on Highway 18, it could have been the end of Jay's golfing career.

That fall at Doral Resort was no boo boo you could just put a bandage on - it was a serious injury that required medical attention. But like all dedicated athletes, Jay and Peach never gave up and fought hard to the finish. And wasn't it interesting....this was the calmest we've ever seen Jay on this series and I don't think it was just the ice and drugs. He took the fall like a man. I bet his dad is pretty proud of him. I will be talking to Jay on Wed morning to get more details on what happened and the injury, but first let's hear from the 2nd place team - those crazy gals from Canada - Ashleigh and Ashley.

video
videoWould you have believed the Ash's would still be here after the 2nd episode? Neither did they - they didn't even bring enough clothes. Guys...make note...woman do NOT always overpack! Jay joins us now and gives us an inside scoop as to his injury and how Golf Channel dealt with it.
videoSo sad really. Jay and Peach were considered the favorites by many. Must have been really hard to watch the final episode from the sidelines, but I guess we'll hear more about that next week. But the good news this week is that Peach has joined the party. What a nice man! Of course, we chatted about Jay's accident, but also about some other things we've all been dying to ask him about his name, his relationship with Jay...
videoMeanwhile, I asked Charlotte what she thought of the hole assignments at the end - they seemed a bit uneven to me. And she also clears up what happens next week given they are heading into it with no strikes to the Ash's one.
videoRob shares more details about the whole day and the impact Jay's injury had on the last challenge.
videoRaul watched it for the first time last night because he went home for a day during the taping, and shares why that episode surprised him so much...

video

I was sorry we didn't get to see more of Andy and Parker at that pit stop at Shell World in Key Largo. But we do get to hear from Parker today and his take on what happened at Shell World and the final challenge.

video

So it sounds like Jay and Peach were allowed to compete, but the time difference from the doctor's visit was just too much for them to overcome. That makes sense to me. It would be unfair if the time at the doctor's had not counted against them I guess. Every other delay we've seen so far, for whatever reason, has been counted. So as sad as it is, I guess the only fair thing to do was to count that time. Can you imagine if they didn't get that penalty? Given Jay's one-handed talents, I think we would have seen some other contestants yelling "Foul!".

Anyway...on to next week. I can't to watch, but at the same time, I am not happy to see the show end. I do hope they bring back another Highway 18 and I hope Andy and Parker become regulars on Golf Channel.

Ryder Cup quotes and quips

Everyone can't stop talking about the Ryder Cup and how the US skunked the Euros. It was quite the spectacle.

When I thought about writing this post, I looked around at what others were saying and thought, there's not much more one can say, really - the US played better. For once, in a long time, the European team just wasn't "on form", except of course, the one person who I thought shouldn't be there - Ian Poulter.

Now, I still think Faldo picked the wrong person this year. Ian is a great player and he played great, but I think Darren Clarke would also have played just as well and he would have spurred on his team mates more. Maybe with Clarke there, Harrington, Garcia and especially Westwood, would have been "on form" too.

But, that's something we'll never know. So time to drop that topic - no point in kicking a dead horse.

Anyway, not much new in the North American media today - we heard it all yesterday. But today, Faldo's boys had to head home, so I decided to check out my favorite UK writers again to see what they have to say. Once again, they didn't disappoint...

Neil Squires of Daily Express had some choice words worth sharing..."When the dust settles and the inquest begins, it will be possible to call into question both men’s judgment but neither’s wholehearted commitment to the cause. Azinger...wanted the scalp of a six-time Major champion. Faldo’s journey was more about satisfying his own ego. When he chose to introduce his family one by one at a bizarre opening ceremony speech he mentioned that it was great to have the younger members at Valhalla because they would not have been able to remember his playing days. This has been his return to the centre stage all great players one day have to leave."

Yup, it's all about Faldo.

And according to Mr. Squires, Azinger's off-course antics raised eyebrows. Allegedly, under Azinger's watch, "the practice tee boxes were suspiciously moved, rendering the European caddies’ yardage charts largely redundant."

Ah ha! That's why Sergio's ball kept going in the water - wrong yardage charts! Hmmmm....I don't think so.

What killed me in this article, however, was the reporter's comment, "This was street-fighting not statesmanship. The men who follow in 2010 will do things differently, certainly in Europe’s case where the leading captaincy candidates for Celtic Manor are a lot less egocentric than Faldo."

Well, I do agree about the egocentric part, but to say the Welshmen won't be rabble-rousers at the next Ryder Cup is like suggesting that Boo Weekley be on the next cover of GQ magazine - just plain silly.

Anyway, after enjoying Mr. Squires' version of the weekend, I had to read Paul Hayward of Daily Mail. He's quite the writer - lots of metaphors and colorful commentary. I just love this guy. Look how he starts this article...

"America's response to the threat of losing a fourth consecutive Ryder Cup was reminiscent of Charlton Heston holding a musket over his head at a National Rifle Association conference and warning anyone who might be tempted to take it off him: ‘ From my cold, dead hands.’"

Now that's a picture! Here's another one..

When Boo holed from a bunker to go two-up on Wilson, "Azinger was off his buggy, pumping his fists and generally acting like an especially excited gameshow host."

And another...

"By mid-afternoon, the 37th Ryder Cup was having the brain-mashing effect of a Louisville Slugger being banged against a bass drum."

One more...

"We in Europe can’t accuse the Americans of not caring and then empty a tripe bucket on their heads just because Kim high-fives incessantly and Weekley flapped his arms so much at the crowd he was in danger of taking off."

Boo Weekley - I can't stand the tobacco chewing and spitting, but that Dukes of Hazzard boy can play golf. I love what he said when asked how he was feeling, "In terms of adrenaline I feel like a dog that someone done stuck a needle into and it juiced me up like I’ve been running around a greyhound track chasing one of them bunnies.”

Maybe Boo should be writing his own news articles - he just might give Paul a run for his money at the Daily Mail.

But then again, Graeme McDowell isn't too bad at painting a picture either. After he placed 2nd only to Poulter on the European Score Card, he said, "This was an unforgettable experience. I don’t think I’ve ever had as much fun with my clothes on."

Now that's a picture I can live with - finally something pleasant to take away the vision of the backside of Boo horsing around.

Nick Faldo - From Bambi Slayer to Clucking Matriarch

I promised myself I wasn't going to write anything nasty about Nick Faldo in my blog, even though I'm royally peeved that he chose Ian Poulter over Darren Clarke for his team.

After months of saying that "form" would be vital, he snubbed Clarke, who definitely was in better form having won two events to Poulter's none.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Ian Poulter, but he didn't deserve the spot over Clarke this year. Sorry Ian :-(

Yeah, I know, that's old news now, but I must say in following the media lately about the Ryder Cup, I am amazed at the coverage the captains are getting over the players. It's like the event is all about them and not the real stars of the game. Even Golf Channel hosted a two hour "Captain's Challenge". I have to admit, I did not enjoy that show very much. I am no fisherman and although I like a good game of Pai Gow, watching fishing or someone else play cards [yawn...'xcuse me...] bores me.

Anyway, about not ragging on Nick...The thing is, I don't have to. His countrymen are doing it for me. Below is one good example. This article was published in the Daily Mail by reporter Paul Howard. I was really surprised at his protrayal of Nick, "the P***k" Faldo, given he's a Brit. In fact, I've been quite shocked reading a lot of the media about Faldo from his home country. So much of it is negative. You won't see US papers slamming Paul Azinger that way too often.

Maybe that's why I love these UK rags - they love to stir the pot! :-)

One of my favorite quotes in here (in case you don't want to read the whole article) is this one:

"As the man who shot Bambi by excluding Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke, Europe’s captain had already prepared the ground for widespread scepticism about his capacity to detach self-regard from the strategic needs of his players. "

Nick the Bambi Slayer!

And when Faldo called himself the "mother hen" of his team, I love Howard's reference to Nick as the "clucking matriarch" - too funny!

But as much as I want to say I'm going to boycott these games on principle, I know that I will be glued to the TV this weekend and will be cheering on my favorites (from both sides of the ocean).

And I'll cruise through the European papers looking for quotable quotes for my post Ryder Cup rant and rave.

Highway 18 Episode 8: From Immunity to Elimination

Four remaining teams went from swamp to swank tonight on Highway 18, except for one team that went from swamp to quicksand.

If you had been asked before the show who you thought would be elminated, I doubt very much that you would have predicted Raul and Jameica. Twice they gained immunity and then BAM!... all at once, they're gone. Amazing...

The episode began with teams racing in airboats on Lake Okeechobee, followed by a round of “croquet golf” at the ultra-exclusive Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach. I was thinking of booking my next golf round there, but darn, it's private. I guess I'll save my pennies and play at Trump International Golf Club (yeah, right!).

Does Donald Trump have too much money or what!

Anyway, back to the show...

Tonight I had a chance to chat with Charlotte right after the show to get her perspective on what appeared to be her hardest show to date. It certainly was an emotional day for her, especially given the behind-the-scenes penalities she was awarded and seeing her friends Raul and Jameica come so close to beating her and Rob...but not quite...

video

Then you have the Ash's...flying so high after last week's come back. With their attitudes (or altitudes) right now, anything is possible.

First Ashleigh K...

video

Now Little Miss Trouble...

video

Rob, the eternal optimist didn't disappoint this week either...

video
Jameica was very gracious today and spoke about that disappointing day and her challenges at Trump Challenge. She had a few things to say about the drama as well...

video

Finally, we get to hear from Raul, who shares more insights on the day and some pretty good analysis of the team dynamics. He also shows us what true friendship is all about.
video

There's a saying that "It's better to be lucky than good." and some may think that tonight's show gives credibility to that. But maybe the cliche that applies is "Looks can be deceiving".

Certainly Ashleigh and Ashley come across as the underdogs, but they seem to be able to pull off the clutch shots when they need them. Can they make it to the end? Well, we heard from Ashley that next week will be "awesome". Hmmm, wonder what awesome means?
What would shock you on Highway 18 after what you've seen to date? Who's next to leave OR get a strike?
I'll be adding the rest of the interviews on Wed and Thurs, so stay tuned...

Highway 18 - Episode 7: Never give up...Never surrender

Tonight's Highway 18 episode might have been seventh heaven for the Ash's, but for the southern boys, Andy and Parker, it was hell on wheels.

What a sad day for those good ole boys and all of us fans. They have been such a huge part of the entertainment - they will be sadly missed. But I love what Parker said - they still can say they were 1st - 1st to be eliminated on the 1st Highway 18.

I was pleased to be able to chat with Parker this week to get his thoughts on that day. He and Andy are truly "southern gentleman".

video

There were so many times tonight when I said out loud, "I can't believe that just happened." The first time was when Pinnacle Long Drive team member Brian Pavlet hit a putter 292 yards! I have trouble getting long putts to the hole and he hits one 292 yards! Crazy. Next it was hearing Ashley say the show had been good in terms of "eye candy", in reference to Brian - too funny, especially after Peach called the girls eye candy just a couple of weeks ago.

Then listening to the Ash's laugh and sing "We are the losers" after their struggles at the range and the boys whistle "Jesus loves the little children of the world", I started to wonder if maybe a little carbon monoxide was leaking into their cars. LOL

Finally it was those two short birdie putts that Andy and Parker missed. It was so uncharacteristic of them, especially when we remember the unbelievably long putts Andy made in the last two episodes. But I guess that's why they call it golf...

I chatted with Ashley and Ashleigh after the show and needlesstosay, they were riding high. How they recovered after the range is still hard to understand, but Ashley does share some insights into things that happened that we didn't see...

video

video

Jay joined me this morning to talk about Brian Pavlet's amazing talents off the tee with crazy clubs and Raul and Jameica's hole strategy. He also had something to say about the difficulty of their hole versus Andy and Parker's...

video

We haven't heard from Jameica in a while. I wanted to get her perspective on last week's ruling and also on her and Raul's strategy on hole assignments. Sounds like we are in for some drama in weeks to come...
video

Now let's hear from Raul - I think you'll agree that their strategy for hole assignments was based on some serious thinking and scenerio analysis...

video

And let's not forget half of the last team with still not strikes - Rob Campbell...
video

And his lovely and very talented sister, Charlotte...

video

Yes, it was a sad day indeed for Andy and Parker, but something tells me those two southern gents won't be gone for long. We'll see them again soon and they'll be as funny and entertaining as ever.

But for the two Crazy Canucks, it's a day of celebration. They may have come in 2nd tonight, but I bet they feel like The Champions of the World.

I'll be chatting with the other contestants this week, so ya'll come back now, ha hear!

Camilo Villegas - so much more than just a pretty face!

Back in April, I did a post on GFW (which is sadly no more) about Golf Channel's "Top 10 Sexiest Golfers". I've resurrected it here because it seems so appropriate now that Camilo Villegas has proven that he's not just another pretty face/body anymore.

There is a saying that marketing people like me use when we're forced to put lipstick on a pig "It's better to look good than to be good." Such is NOT the case with CV.

I'm so glad I ended my post the way I did all those months ago (don't cheat and jump to the bottom :))...

Here's that post...

I wonder who picked the winners and what criteria did they use for choosing the top 10 sexiest golfers?

There were some that were "no contest" winners and others that did not rock my boat at all. Perhaps it was because they tried to do the Top 10 with golfers from both sexes and 30 years difference in ages. I don't think that worked.

But in case you missed it...here's the mixed bag of winners...

Just like People Magazine does their "hot lists" each year (where Camilo Villegas made the list of hottest bachelors in 2006), The Golf Channel should do Top 10's one year at a time. First, it gives them a show to do every year that people will "wait for" AND it puts the players in the same space in terms of their looks, game, age, fitness, etc.

Seeing Greg Norman as number 9 bugged me just a bit. If this were the 80's, he'd be number 1 for sure. I completely agree with Stina...His broad shoulders, skiny waist, Australian "savage" accent and Crocodile Dundee persona come together in a package that can't be beat. In his day, Greg Norman was number 1. But today? Well, for women my age, he's still a hunk. But ask a 20 year old, and they might say, sadly, "Greg Who?"

Don't get me wrong....I did enjoy the show and some of my favorites made the list, like Freddie Couples and Adam Scott. But still...they are not even in the same generation. I don't think they should be in the same list. And putting them in with Sophie Sandolo seemed completely out of wack to me. Sure she's got some nude calendars that on the surface are sexy (I guess), but sex appeal is more than skin deep. The whole package has to be there and we don't even know her (although we will in a few weeks when the Big Break airs). I'm not at all convinced Sophie deserves to be in this list, but I'll hold judgement until after the Big Break is over.

Paula Creamer, who was on the cutting room floor IS the whole package IMHO - beautiful, talented, great personality, stylish, confident and dare I say...modest? I would vote for her over the "skin girls" Sophie and Natalie any day of the week.

Sophie and Natalie are the result of great marketing, but something's missing for me. Okay okay...I'm not a guy, but if Adam Scott is sexiest male golfer, and he looks like the guy you'd bring home to meet dad - a pretty wholesome guy (no tight pants and tops like Sergio), why didn't girl-next-door Paula make the list?

BTW...did you see Mr. McNab's comment on the Golf Channel website about Natalie...“Unless your into leathery sun baked skin, and wrinkled knarlly hands. Seeing Gulbis in the gym without make-up was a frightning site.” Yikes...if she looks bad, I need a paper bag over my entire body in my gym. Sorry, Mr. McNab, but anyone who works out in the gym is sexy to me.

Anyway, by throwing men and women from 20 to over 50 in the same bag this year, I think the Golf Channel missed out on a great opportunity for an "annual event" they could really play up and market.

And in case you were wondering...hands down, the sexiest golfer in my opinion is Spiderman, Camilo Villegas. He's enough to give a woman hot flashes at any age. Tiger's great and yes sexy, but he doesn't have the effect Villegas has on women. If I ran into Camilo in person, I'd probably feel like the wicked witch of the west...."I'm melting...I'm melting...!!!!"

From Glory to Gory for Rory

It was a sad day for the great phenom, Rory McIlroy today at the European Masters. He started the day with a 4 shot lead - hard to believe you can lose with that - but he did.
What was his problem - too much confidence? - too much adrenalin? - too little experience? Maybe all of the above, because he certainly started off pretty poorly with 2 bogies in the first 3 holes In fact at one point he was in 4th place.

But...the 19 year old sucked it up like a real pro and headed down the 18th hole 1 shot ahead. So what happened that caused him to over-shoot the green on a pretty simple pitch and miss a makeable 5 footer?

I heard Warren and Julian say he was rushing his shots, but I'm not so sure. Rory always plays fast (which I love!) and so it looked like he was playing his normal game to me. But maybe that was his problem. With nerves and adrenlin pumping in veins, maybe he needed to change - maybe he needed to slow down. I've heard winning players say that before - they slow eeeevvverryrythiiiing doooownn when they get close to the end. And I'm sure with Rory's lack of experience and youthful enthusiasm, he was probably picturing himself with the trophy before he pitched over the green. The shock on his face said it all. It was sad, but as they say, "What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger."

His post round interview was impressive.

Obviously I am very disappointed," he said. "I got very unlucky on the 18th in regulation, where it got a pretty big bounce for a sand wedge. I hit a good chip, but not a very good putt. Then second time around in the play-off it didn't really matter as he holed his. That made me feel a bit better after missing that putt. I can take a lot from this week - I played very well all week and played well coming down the stretch, but unfortunately one bad shot cost me."I came here after three missed cuts in a row and found a bit of form. It would have been nice to go home with the trophy, but I have plenty more tournaments even this year. It would be great to get a win this year, but if not I have the rest of my career. C'est la vie."

That doesn't sound like immaturity to me.

My golfguy reminded me this morning as we watched this painful loss, about the time when 20 year old, amateur, Jack Nicklaus took a one-shot lead with six holes to play in the 1960 US Open at Cherry Hills. Can you imagine how that younster felt then? Unfortunately Jack's back-to-back, 3-putt bogeys on 13 and 14 resulted in a a second-place finish, two shots behind Arnold Palmer. I never got to see that tournament, but I wonder if those who did would have predicted that Nicklaus would go on to win 18 majors and come second 19 times.

Well, for the record, I predict that Rory McIlroy will win the most majors of any European player ever. And I expect him to win his first major within 2 years!

Highway 18 - Episode 6: Would Bobby or Walter turn over in their graves?

So did you enjoy tonight's episode of Highway 18? I wonder what Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen would have thought of it - haha. I'm sure they're rolling over in their graves, thinking, "What the heck has happened to the game of golf!?!

Well, we saw another trivia challenge kick off tonight's show, which I found a bit ho-hum. I think we've done enough trivia on the show, but it was good to see Andy and Parker "not look as stupid as they sound" and come out on top (BTW...that was Parker's quote on episode 1, not mine :)).

The up and down at Bellair Country Club seemed to be a pretty simple challenge on the surface, but after talking to the contestants, I guess those clubs were next to impossible to hit. Unfortunately, we couldn't quite see that on TV, but according to Ashleigh K, it took a loooong time to get the ball in the hole for many of them.

The day really got interesting when the teams headed to the site of the 1926 historic match between Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen - Sara Bay.

I was happy to see some real golf and see the players hit some pretty decent shots. And I was really pleased to see Ashley and Ashleigh hold their own pretty well against Jay and Peach.

There was a lot of hype around Peach's "rule violation" of touching the line of his putt before the show aired, but I didn't think it was a big deal in the end. He seemed very reasonable about the whole thing.

But...I guess we didn't see everything that went on behind the scenes that day. I spoke to Ashleigh and Ashley tonight about the episode and they shed some light on things we missed.

video

video

BTW...I've been hearing (and reading) people question whether the contestants may have known about the "super leg" or other surprises that came their way. Well, I wasn't there, but I have been assured that the contestants knew nothing about what awaited them, other than the daily contracts they had to sign about each challenge. They had to do that, so that a contestant couldn't sue later and say "that's not what I heard". Other than those contracts, they were clueless about the twists and turns like we saw today with no strike handed out and immunity awarded instead.

The fact that there hasn't been anyone elminated is just luck of the game - nothing is rigged - what you see, is what really happened. When you see a team play a hole twice or 3 or 4 times, then that's what happened that day. GC does a pretty good job of including everything it can to present a realistic picture of the day.

Charlotte confirms this in her interview today for us and, as usual, gives us further insights into the show...

video

And of course, the blog would not be complete without hearing from Jay Reynolds share his views on the loss of hole he and Peach received after Peach touched his putting line. I caught up with him in an airport on his way to the New Mexico Open...

video

And let's not forget one of the funniest contestants on the show - Andy Crain. I took a risk and asked him about his Golf "This sucks!" Central experience and giving up his chance to ride in a race car at Daytona. Let's just say, he was not amused by either, but his southern gentlemanly style couldn't let him tell me to take a hike ;)

video

And last, but certainly not least, Raul Cendoya - Nothing gets by this guy!!

video

If you're wondering who next week's surprise guest is that Raul spoke about, it's Pinnacle Long Drive team member Brian Pavlet. I guess we'll be seeing some jaw-dropping shots next episode. I also just learned that, yes indeed, someone is going home on Tuesday. Hmmm...Raul and Jameica have immunity. Rob and Charlotte have no strikes so they would appear to be safe. So...it must be one of A&P, A&A or J&P. Who do you think it will be?

I'm glad I'm on this side of the TV given what these teams are going through. So...let's just sit back and enjoy the race. Next week, someone could finally go home.
